You have 2 equations:
n + q = 49
.05 n + ,25q = 8.65
This is a system of equations. You can solve it by substitution. It's easier if you simplify the 2nd equation by multiplying both sides by 100 to get
5n = 25q = 865
You can simplify this equation more by dividing both sides by 5 to get
n + 5q = 173
Solve the first equation for n to get
n = 49 - q
Now substitute this nto the 2nd equation to get
49 - q + 5q = 173
Solve this to ge
q = 31
Now substitute this back into the first equation to get
n + 31 = 49
Solve for n to get
n = 18
This gives you 18 nickels and 31 quarters.
I hope this helps!
