Hi Nena,
The equation of the line y = 2x - 7 is written in slope- intercept form (y=mx + b).
The slope is represented by m and the y-intercept is represented by b.
Also, the slopes of parallel lines are the same.
In the given equation, the slope is 2.
As a result, we know the slope of the parallel line would be 2 as well.
Now we just need to substitute the coordinates of the point (5, -1) on your parallel line to find it's y-intercept:
y = 2x + b
-1 = 2 •5 + b
-1 = 10 + b
-1 -10 = 10 + b -10
-11 = b
The y-intercept of the parallel line will be -11
The equation of the parallel line will be:
y = 2x -11
