Bob goes to the store and buys three hamburgers and 1 coke and pays $8.40. Meg goes to the same store and buys one hamburger and one coke for $3.40

hamburgers cost $2.50, coke just 90 cents

3H + C = 8.40

H + C = 3.40

subtract to get

2H = 5

H = 5/2 = $2.50

C = 3.4 -2.5 = .9 = 90 cents
