What's the solution to -7(x-4)-8=2(x+2)+1?
.....I am assuming you mean what is the value of x....
-7(x-4)-8=2(x+2)+1?........In algebra, you want to combine like terms and isolate the unknown variable to one side....so....
-7(x-4)-8=2(x+2)+1...........first simply expression multiplying remove parenthesis....
-7x+28- 8 = 2x + 4 + 1.......evaluate the expressions....
-7x + 20 = 2x + 5...........combine like terms by subtracting 2x from both sides or adding 7x to both sides....
-9x + 20 = 5 or 20 = 9x + 5............either way your goal is to ISOLATE the variable to one side...like so..
-9x = -15 or 9x = 15...............divide both sides by -9 in the first equation and 9 in the second equation...
x = -15/-9 = 1 2/3.....x = 1 2/3 or x = 5/3.......now we need to check and see if x = 5/3...lets see...
-7(x-4)-8=2(x+2)+1..... -7 (5/3 - 12/3) - 24/3 = 2 (5/3 + 6/3) + 3/3......now evaluate the terms.....
-35/3 + 84/3 - 24/3 = 25/3.......10/3+12/3 + 3/3 = 25/3....both sides evaluate to 25/3...so x = 5/3. Right?
