Let Jenny be “X” and Matthew is “3X” since he is 3 times older than Jenny (Multiplication). Matthew’s equation would be 3x+8 and Jenny’s would be x+8.

3x+8=2(x+8)

The two represents Matthew being twice as old.

3x+8=2x+16

You have to simplify the 2nd equation.

3x=2x+8

x=8

Jenny would be 8 years old now.
