three times x is expressed as 3*x
three times x is less than -9 : 3*x< 9
three times x is less than -9 and greater than -15: -15< 3*x < -9
Now we need to isolate the x (get rid of the 3). Since the 3 is multiplying the x we can divide by 3 to get rid of it since 3/3= 1 and 1*x is simply x. BUT, whatever you do on one part of the equation/inequality, you have to do it to the other side(s). This means you must divide the -15 and the -9 by 3.
The end result is: -5<x<-3 , which means that X must be greater than -5 and less than -3.
