The distance from x=-10 to x=2 is 2 - (-10) = 12 units. We can divide this in the ratio of 5:3 by dividing 12 by 8 then multiplying by 5 and 3. This gives 12/8 x 5 = 7.5 and 12/8 x 3 = 4.5. The ratio of these two results 7.5/4.5 = 1.66... which is the same as 5/3. So, if 4.5 is the distance from x = -10, the coordinates of this point is (-5.5, -3).

You have to divide 12 units in the ratio 5:3 you will get 7.5 and 4.5:
Divide 12/(5+3) = 12/8 = 1.5
Multiplying each of 5 and 3 by 1.5 will give you 7.5 and 4.5
Now add 7.5 to x coordinate -10, so the point would be at (-2.5,-3).
This point is 7.5 units from (-10,-3) and also 4.5 units from (2,-3)
