The length of the segment is 12 units. If you plot the points on the graph you can see that it is parallel to the x axis (line y =-3). You have to divide 12 units in the ratio 5:3 you will get 7.5 and 4.5: Divide 12/(5+3) = 12/8 = 1.5 Multiplying each of 5 and 3 by 1.5 will give you 7.5 and 4.5 Now add 7.5 to x coordinate -10, so the point would be at (-2.5,-3). This point is 7.5 units from (-10,-3) and also 4.5 units from (2,-3)
