Let's use the variable, x , to represent the age of the younger person.
Then we can write the following expression to represent the age of the older person (recall that "sum" indicates addition): 9 + 8x
Since we know the sum of their ages is 45, we can write and solve the following equation to find the age of the younger person first:
younger person's age + older person's age = 45
x + 9 + 8x = 45
Combine like terms and use inverse operations to determine x:
9x + 9 = 45
9x + 9 - 9 = 45 - 9
9x = 36
9x/9 = 36/9
x = 4
The younger person is 4 years old.
The older person will be 9 + 8x = 9 + 8 • 4 = 9 + 32 = 41
The older person is 41 years old.
Note that 41 + 4 = 45
