However, this might help.
Acceleration occurs due to NET force. Even though the earth is exerting a downward force, there is an equal and opposite upward force exerted by whichever surface the object is resting on. Therefore no net force. Hence no acceleration. Mind you this is not a reference to Newton's third law even though equal and opposite forces are mentioned.
