Choose an arbitrary point (x,y). The slope of the line through the point (-1,6) can be written (y - 6)/(x - (-1) = (y-6)/(x+1). Set this equal to the given slope -3 to get (y-6)/(x+1) = -3. Multiply both sides of the equation by (x + 1) to get y - 6 = -3(x+1). Multiply the parenthesis by -3 to get y - 6 = -3x -3. Add 6 to both sides of the equation to get y = -3x -3 +6 which then simplifies to y = -3x +3.
