A line parallel to 5x-y=4 and passes through the point (-2,-2)
The first thing to do is to write the equation in slope intercept form: (y = mx + b)
5x - y = 4
-5x -5x
- y = -5x + 4 ( you must eliminate the negative from the y so change all signs)
y = 5x - 4 (you now have the slope which is 5- the m part)
Now take the point and use it in the point - slope formula y - y1 = m(x - x1 )
( -2, -2 ) m = 5
x1 , y1
y + 2 = 5 (x + 2) the -2's become positive when you subtract a negative.
The use the Distributive Property y + 2 = 5x + 10
-2 -2 subtract two form both sides to get y alone
y = 5x + 8
You notice the slopes are parallel because they are equal to each other (the definition of parallel slopes).
