A football team of 48 players is riding to an away game in cars (x) that seat 4 players and vans (y) that seat 6 players. Write an equation and find the intercepts. Interpret their meaning.
4X + 6Y = 48
X-INTERCEPT is where the line crosses the X-AXIS, and the Y coordinate is ZERO. So, plug 0 into Y in the above equation:
4X + (6)(0) = 48
4X + 0 = 48
4X = 48
X = 12 Divide both sides by 12.
ANSWER: THE X-INTERCEPT IS 12, WHICH IS THE COORDINATE (12,0).
This means if there are NO VANS, then there has to be 12 CARS, since
the total number of players is 48, and (4)(12) = 48.
Y-INTERCEPT is where the line crosses the Y-AXIS, and the X coordinate is ZERO. So, plug 0 into X in the above equation:
(4)(0) + 6Y = 48
0 + 6Y = 48
6Y = 48
Y = 8 Divide both sides by 6.
ANSWER: THE Y-INTERCEPT IS 8, WHICH IS THE COORDINATE (0,8).
This means if there are NO CARS, then there has to be 8 VANS, since
the total number of players is 48, and (8)(6) = 48.
Hope this helped you Angel.
