Let's use the variable , w, to represent the width of the field.
Since the length of the rectangle is 3 feet longer than the width, we can write the following expression to represent the length of the rectangle: w + 3
The perimeter is the sum of all the side measurements (which is 50 feet in this problem). This sum would be:
w + w + (w + 3) + (w + 3) = 50
Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to find the width, w :
w + w + (w + 3) + (w + 3) = 50
4w + 6 = 50
4w + 6 - 6 = 50 - 6
4w = 44
4w/4 = 44/4
w = 11
The width of the rectangle will be 11 feet.
The length of the rectangle will be w + 3 = 11 + 3
The length will be 14 feet.
