Start by setting up the equation of notebooks and pens with the total cost,
6n + 3p= 27
We are told that the cost of one notebook is $1.50 more than 1 pen, finding the second equation of,
n= 1.50 +1p
Sub "n" in the 1st equation and solve,
6(1.50+ 1p) + 3p= 27
6 x 1.50=9
6x 1p= 6p
9+ 6p+ 3p= 27
Combine like terms and solve for p,
9p = 18
p= 2
Sub 2 for "p" into the the 2nd equation to solve for "n",
n= 1.50+2
n=3.50
Add p and n together to find the total cost for 1 pen and 1 notebook to find your answer,
2+3.50= $5.50
You can check your answer by multiplying the pens (2x3=6) & notebooks (3.50x6=21) and add them together to get the total of 27
