First set up an equation for each company. Company A charges $60 a day and $.40 a mile so you can write that equation as follows:
60 + .40x
Company B charges $40 a day and $.90 a mile so you can write an equation as follows:
40 + 90x
Next set the two equations equal to each other and solve for x:
60 + .40x = 40 + .90x
-.40x -.40x
60 = 40 + .50x
-40 -40
20 = .5x
.5 .5
x = 40
So the number of miles in a day in which the rental costs for Company A and B are the same is 40 miles.
