There were 54

 runners to start a race. In the first half of the race, 2/3

 of them dropped out. In the second half of the race, 1/6

 of the remaining runners dropped out. How many runners finished the race?

Start with 54 runners. First half drop outs = (2/3) x 54 = 36 which leaves 18 runners.

Second half dropouts = (1/6) x 18 = 3, leaving 15 runners to finish the race.
