Let's use the variable, x, to represent the number of erasers that Sam has.
Then we can write the following expression for the number that Sari has: 3x
Since their sum is 28, we can write and solve the following equation to find the number of erasers each person has:
Sam's erasers + Sari's erasers = 28
x + 3x = 28
4x = 28
4x/4 = 28/4
x = 7
Sam has 7 erasers. Sari will have 3 times more than Sam or 21 erasers.
