Displacement is defined as the distance between the starting and ending point. Distance is the amount traveled to reach the ending point from the starting point. If a person were to go 50 meters east, then 50 meters west, they would end up at their starting point. So their displacement is 0 meters, but the distance traveled would be 100 meters.
