- Vertex form is a (x-h)2 + k. Here a = 1. In (x-h)2 we need a -4x term, giving h=2 . (x-2)2 = x2-4x+4, and we need to subtract 16 to get to f(x). So f(x) = (x-2)2 -16, h = 2 k = -16 . vertex = (h,k) = (2, -16)
- x2 - 4x - 12 = (x-6) (x+2) . When y = 0, x-6 = 0 or x+2 = 0, so x = 6 or -2 (x intercepts)
- Use Desmos or graphing calculator
- Read off the range (y values) from your graph.
