A learning disorder can be multiple things. It can be characterized by a difficulty in reading or spelling (dyslexia), a difficulty in math or grasping numerical concepts (dyscalculia), or a difficulty in putting words to paper (or computer, in terms of typing) such as dysgraphia. These can occur in anyone, and there is no specific cause for them, although causes can include environment, head trauma, and genetics. You can get testing done if you believe you or your child have them by an educational psychologist, generally. Other mental health conditions that can contribute to learning issues, but that aren't formal learning disorders are ADHD/ADD, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, and Down's Syndrome, to name a few. - from a psychology TA
