A rental car company charges $36 plus a fourth of a dollar per mile. How many miles can Shawn drive if he only has $200?

Edward has the correct answer, but the equation might be better expressed as a < or = to expression. Shawn may not want to use up all of his $200. Show him the range of miles he could drive before running out of money: $36 + .25X <= $200 where X is the miles driven. The "<=" is read "less than or equal to." Solve as with any other equation to get: X <= 656 miles Shawn can drive 656 or fewer miles for his $200. If he drove 646 miles, he could use his remaining $2.50 for a cup of gas station coffee. Bob
