Science Project

For a science assignment, Friedrich and his classmates are to go outside and mark off a plot 2 feet by 2 feet and count the number of insects on top of the soil in order to estimate the population of insects on the front yard of the school. Friedrich finds 10 insects on his plot. If the other students found a similar number of insects to be found on the front property of the school that measures 4 feet by 25 feet.

The wording seems odd to me. I’m assuming it wants you to take the findings of the 2x2 plot’s number of insects to estimate the population of insects on the property measuring 4x25. If I’d calculate the two areas my multiplying, i.e. 2ft*2ft = 4 sq ft and 4ft*25ft = 100 sq ft. Then a proportion would work to estimate the population Of insects on the from property of the school. 10 insects / 4 sq ft = x insects / 100 sq ft. Solve this for x to estimate he population.
