The digestive system is the system responsible for digesting the food we eat so that it can be utilized by the body. It starts with the mouth and ends with the anus. Between the two, is a system of hollow organs: the mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, the small intestine, and the large intestine. There are also three solid organs that are part of the digestive system: the liver, the pancreas, and the gallbladder. These three organs empty their digestive juices or secretions into the hollow digestive tract.
The stomach is made up of the fundus, the body and the pyloric antrum. It has two sphincters at each end. The small intestine is made up of three parts: the duodenum, the jejunum and the ileum. The large intestine is made up of the cecum, the colon, and the rectum. There is also a vestigial pouch at the start of the large intestine called the appendix. Each section of this system has an important function either in the digestion of food or excretion of the fibers that are not digested.
