lets make the number equal "x"
the difference between 9 and a number is equivalent to (9-x) and if we have 7 times the difference we get the equation 7(9-x)
we then set that equal to 22 and get 7(9-x) = 22
divide by 7 on both sides to get (9-x) = 22/7
we then subtract by 9 on both sides which gives us -x = 22/7 - 9
now to get rid of the negative we divide by -1 on both sides
we end with x = (-22/7) + 9 which is 5.857 (or 41/7)
