We create a mathematical expression when we combine numbers and variables using mathematical symbols to show the value of something
FOR EXAMPLE: Math Expressions can look like 2+ 3 or even like 5-2
When doing algebra, we often use variables- which are symbols that we use that stands for an unknown value in our problem (we usually use the letter x).
FOR YOUR QUESTION: To rent a beach umbrella, the deposit is $20, plus $3.50 per hour *
We must break down each each portion of the problem:
To begin-
- WE KNOW that whenever we wish to rent an umbrella, we will always pay a deposit fee of $20
- WE KNOW that for every hour we rent the umbrella we will have to pay and additional $3.50
- WE DON'T KNOW how many hours we be renting the umbrella for: for that # of hours will be our variable
So lets put the problem all together:
Deposit + (Hour fee × number of hours rented) = Amount of $ to rent an umbrella
$20 + $3.50x
