The term "y" changes depending on the context you are using it.
"Y" can be a variable. For example, let's say y = 3. I've assigned the variable "y" the value of 3. Then, let's say we are asked to solve this equation:
3*y + 1 = ?
Since we know y = 3, we can substitute that into the equation and solve it.
3*3 + 1 = 10
"Y" can also be in reference to the X,Y plane on a graph. The Y in this case is the vertical height of any point, while the X is the horizontal length of a point on a graph. See here for an example of this: https://cls.syr.edu/mathtuneup/grapha/Unit2/Unit2.html.
