500 ml x 1 mg/ml = 500 mg THIS IS THE MASS NEEDED
Your question asked for the MASS needed. Now, if you want to know the volume of the 50 mg/ml solution that you need, then again, using dimensional analysis we find it is 10 ml....
(x ml)(50 mg/ml) = 500 mg
x = 10 ml
