A dependent event relies on another event.

Dependent event

For example I have a bag with 5 red marbles and 3 blue marble. My first event is taking out 1 marble. The marble I pull out is red. By doing this I lower the probability of picking a red marble in my second event which is pulling out an additional marble. As you can see the probability for the outcome of the second event was influenced by the outcome of the first event.

Independent Event

For example I flip a coin as my first event. My second event is flipping the coin again. The probability of a certain outcome in each event remains the same because it does not matter if you flip a head or a tails in the first event. The second event will still have an equally likely chance of flipping a head or a tails.

Answer

These are dependent events as once you pick the first classmate i.e. Charles then you cannot choose Charles again in the second event as you have removed him from the pool of students you can pick.
