Let's use the variable, x , to represent the smaller of the numbers.
Since the larger number is 6.8 more than three times the smaller, we can write the following expression
for the larger number: 3x + 6.8
Because the difference of the two numbers is 21.6, we can write and solve the following equation to find the value of the smaller number first:
3x + 6.8 - x = 21.6
Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to solve for x:
2x + 6.8 = 21.6
2x + 6.8 - 6.8 = 21.6 - 6.8
2x = 14.8
2x/2 = 14.8 / 2
x = 7.4
The smaller number is 7.4
The larger number will be 3 • 7.4 + 6.8 = 22.2 + 6.8 = 29
