If the price of almonds is regularly 5.99/lb and they are discounted 20%, then the following would be the logic to find the total cost (TC) of 2.5lbs of almonds at the discounted price (DP):
Variables
TC = total cost
P = regular price = $5.99
Q = quantity = 2.5lbs
DP = discounted price = (1-.20)P = 0.8P = 0.8($5.99) = $4.79
Equation
TC = Q(DP)
TC = 2.5($4.79)
TC = $11.98
