the perimeter of a square is 140 less than its area. What is the perimeter of the square

Lets say the length of each side of the square is L

Then perimeter is 4L

area is L²

Therefore L² = 4L +140

rearranging L² -4L -140 = 0

Factorizing by breaking the middle term

L² - 14L +10L -140 = 0

(L-14)(L+10) = 0 in other words either L-14 = 0, or L+10 = 0 0r both factors are = 0

If L-14 = 0, L=14

If L + 10 = 0, L=-10

Logically, length cannot be negative therefore L=14
