Hi Haley,
Let's use the variable, a, represent the number of adult tickets sold and the variable, c, represent the number of child tickets sold.
We can write the following equations to represent the activity described on Wednesday:
c + a = 175
5.30c + 9.30a = 1303.50
Now we can solve these two equations with two unknowns to find the number sold for each type of ticket.
Multiply the first equation by -5.30 to find the number of adult tickets sold:
c + a = 175 becomes -5.30c - 5.30a = -927.50
Now combine this "new" equation with the original second one:
-5.30c - 5.30a = -927.50
5.30c + 9.30a = 1303.50
4a = 376
a = 94
94 adult tickets were sold.
Since there were a total of 175 tickets sold, the number of child tickets will be 81 (OR 175 - 94 = 81)
There were 81 child tickets sold.
