Four things to help you achieve a successful landscape or any painting are:

1. Get an accurate drawing of your subject on the canvas.
2. Check that your composition is working well.
3. Establish your values (lights and darks).
4. When applying paint, get your colors to harmonize throughout the painting.

When talking to students about landscape I ALWAYS will have them look at Tanguy and Dalí. It's good to think about what a landscape is at minimum ( a horizon line, sky, ground) and then imagine what you want your landscape to look like.

There are many things to keep in mind of when it comes to painting a landscape. After finding your perfect composition, first and foremost you want to establish your values. By having a nice spread of values in the painting, it will become easier to distinguish your foreground, middleground, and background. When painting a landscape, always keep in mind how you are defining your forms, whether or not it needs more or less detail, and how you are handling edges.
