Hi Rebecca,
We can solve the two equations using elimination.
-9x - 11y = 108
x + 10y = -8
Multiply the second equation by 9 to find the value of y :
x + 10y = -8 becomes 9x + 90y = -72
Now combine this "new" equation with the first one:
-9x - 11y = 108
9x + 90y = -72
79y = 36
y = 0.456
Now substitute 0.456 for y in either of the original equations to find the value of x.
(Let's use the second equation.)
x + 10y = -8
x + 10 • 0.456 = -8
x + 4.56 = -8
x + 4.56 - 4.56 = -8 - 4.56
x = -12.56
