Vertex form of a parabola: y = a(x - h)2 + k, where (h, k) is the vertex of the parabola.
Plug in the vertex to get y = a(x + 2)2 - 3. (The -2 got negated because of -h)
Plug in the point (-1,-5) to get -5 = a(-1+2)2 -3 (This could be have been done in the previous step)
Now let's solve for a:
-5 = a(1)2-3
-5 = a-3
-2 = a
Since y=ax2+bx+c is the standard form of a parabola and is another way to write y=a(x-h)2 +k, the coefficient of the squared term is "a", so -2 is your answer.
