The first thing you want to do is read the problem and figure out what we already know. "The sum of" tells us there is addition. "Twice a number" we will write as 2x and a number will be x.
(2x + x + 2 = 44) =
Then combine like terms
3x + 2 = 44
Subtract 2 from both sides
3x = 42
Divide both sides by 3
x = 42/3
Simplify
