Hi!
I'm hoping I can answer your questions. Parts b and c are less explicit so we will have to make assumptions.
But first, let's address the question of how much each person saves in a week.
PART A
A week has 7 days so for Tim, who saves $3 a day we just have to multiply 7 by 3.
This gives us 21.
So Tim saves $21 per week.
Alex, on the other hand, saves more money on a weekend. The weekend is 2 days, so we subtract 2 from 7 to give us 5 days where Alex saves $1.
So we multiply 5 by 1 to give us Alex's weekday total and add it to his $8 weekend saving.
$5+$8=$13
So Alex saves $13 per week.
PART B:
In a month that has 30 days who saves more?
With Tim, it is another simple multiplication.
3 multiplied by 30.
This means Tim saves $90 in a 30 day month.
For Alex, we're going to make an assumption that in a 30 day month there are only 4 weekends.
We simply do 4 multiplied by 8 to get Alex's weekend savings.
This comes in at $32
We then need to work out how man weekdays there are.
First we'll calculate how many days are the weekend by doing 4 multiplied by 2.
There are 8 weekend days. So we subtract 8 from the total 30 days to get 22 weekdays.
Then we do 22 multiplied by the 1 dollar a day.
This gives us $22 dollars.
We add the weekend and weekday totals (32+22).
Giving Alex a total of $54.
$90 is more than $54 so Tim saves more on a 30 day month.
PART C:
For Tim, this is simple, once again.
We just multiply 31 by $3
This gives us $93 total.
Now for Alex, we shall assume this time that there are 5 weekends (this is the max number of weekends).
So we do 5 multiplied by $8.
This give us $40 for the weekends.
Then we need to work out the number of weekdays.
So we multiply number of weekends (5) by 2. This gives us 10 days that are the weekend.
We now subtract this from 31 to give us 21 weekdays.
Then we multiply 21 by $1 to find out the total money saved on weekdays.
This gives us $21.
We then add the weekend and weekday total together: 21 + 40
The total for Alex is $61.
This is less than Tim so Tim saves more!
I hope this helps!
