I go with the simpler approach.  Add the 4 to the 1=5....

Then check the minutes, if they don't pass 60 when added, just plop the number after the colon.  If they do, you have to carry the hour, just like in adding or multiplying.

5:45 is the correct answer, regardless of technique.

There are only 60 minutes in an hour, but since the two numbers at the end (:30 and :15 arent greater then 60 when combined, you can just add normally:
