We will use the distributive property to find an equivalent expression.
The outside term is distributed to the two terms inside the parenthesis.
-1/2 (6x) + (-1/2) (-1/2)
Then we use PEMDAS, where the multiplication operation is preformed before the addition operation.
-1/2 times 6x is -3. -1/2 times -1/2 is positive because when two negative numbers are multiplied, the result is positive. To multiply the two fractions, multiply the numbers on top (which are called numerators). So 1 times 1 is 1. Then multiply the numbers on the bottom (which are called denominators). So 2 times 2 is 4. the fraction is 1/4.
-3x + 1/4 is the equivalent expression.
