Christine went shopping and bought each of her 10 nephews a gift, either video costing 14.95 or see costing 16.88. She spent 166.87 on the gifts. How many videos and how many CDs did she buy?

Let V = number of videos

Let C = number of CDs

 

Christine bought 10 gifts, so V + C = 10  ==>  V = 10 - C

 

She spent 166.87, so 14.95V + 16.88C = 166.87

 

Plug the value for V into the 2nd equation to get 

 

14.95(10 - C) + 16.88C = 166.87

149.5 -14.95C + 16.88C = 166.87

1.93C = 17.37

C = 9

 

So V = 10 - 9 = 1

 

So Christine bought 1 video and 9 CDs
