Brian is renting an apartment. The floor plan of the apartment is shown below.

a. What is the total area of the apartment?

b. What are the dimensions of the master bedroom?

c. Brian wants to buy a dining room table from the local furniture store. He sees a table that is 9 ft long and 3 ft wide. Would it be reasonable to buy this table to put in the dining room? Why or why not?

a. You could determine the area of the whole apartment by breaking it up into 3 rectangles. master bedroom, dining room, living room & kitchen and counting the number of blocks * 9 square feet. The entrance is a triangle that removes 2 half blocks (or 9 square feet) from that total.

b. The master bedroom has 30 blocks for a total of 270 square feet. The length is 6 blocks and the width is 5 blocks, so if x is width, then length is 6/5 x and area = x * 6/5 x = 270. x^2*6 = 1350. x^2 = 225 and x =15.

So length = 15 and width = 18.

c. The dining room is 9 blocks * 9sq ft/block = 81 square foot and it is a square, so the dimension are 9 x 9. A 9 foot long table would leave no room to spare and would not fit.
