The second side of a triangular deck is 6 feet longer than the shortest side, and the third side is 6 feet shorter than twice the length of the shortest side. If the perimeter of the deck is 60 feet, what are the lengths of the three sides?
Which side do we know nothing about?
We know nothing about the shortest side!
Let x be the length of the shortest side...
2nd side is x+6
3rd side is 2x-6
The perimeter is 60
60 = x + x+6 + 2x-6
60 = 4x
x=15
The dimensions of the triangle are 15, 21, and 24,
which has perimeter 60
