Hi there,
First you can write three expressions to represent the legs and the hypotenuse of the triangle.
Using the variable x to represent the shorter leg, we write the following expression for the longer leg: x + 7
The hypotenuse would be represented by the following expression: x + 8
Now use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the value of x so that you can add all three sides and find the perimeter:
a2 + b2 = c2
For this triangle:
x2 + (x+7)2 = (x + 8)2
We can expand this equation and complete the square to find x as follows:
x2 + (x+7)2 = (x + 8)2
x2 + x2 + 14x + 49 = x2 + 16x + 64
2x2 + 14x + 49 = x2 + 16x + 64
2x2 + 14x + 49 - x2 = x2 + 16x + 64 - x2
x2 + 14x + 49 = 16x + 64
x2 + 14x + 49 -16x = 16x + 64 - 16x
x2 - 2x + 49 - 49 = 64 - 49
x2 - 2x = 15 (Now divide -2 by 2 , square your result and add to both sides)
x2 - 2x + 1 = 15 + 1
(x - 1)2 =16
x - 1 = 4
x = 5 (Using only positive root)
Since x = 5, the short leg will be 5 cm, the long leg will be 12 cm, and the hypotenuse will be 13 cm.
The perimeter will be 5 + 12 + 13 = 30 cm
