Set up a system of equations:
Let s = price of sugar cookies
Let o = price of oatmeal cookies
9s + o = $49
8s + 6o = $110
To use the elimination method, multiply the first equation by -6 and then add to the second equation. This will eliminate the o term and then you can solve for s.
-6* [9s + o = $49] → -54s - 6o = -$294
[-54s - 6o = -$294] + [8s + 6o = $110] → -46s = -$184 → s = $4
Plug s into either of the original equations to solve for o:
9s + o = $49 → o = $49 - 9s = $49 - 9($4) = $49 - $36 = $13
So s = $4 and o = $13
