Find the cost of one daylily and the cost of one geranium.

Jacob and Paul each improved their yards by planting daylilies and geraniums. They bought their supplies from the same store. Jacob spent $50 on 3 daylilies and 4 geraniums. Paul spent $94 on 3 daylilies and 8 geraniums. Find the cost of one daylily and the cost of one geranium. 

We need to find out what x and y represents and the system of equations.

Answer 1

If x = cost of a lily

if y= cost of a geranium

we can set up two equations to determine the cost of 1 lily and 1 geranium'

3 x + 4 y =50

3 x + 8 y = 94

Using the additive inverse for 3 x

1. 4 y = -44
2. each geranium is $11
3. and substituting in each lily is $2

Jacob: 3D + 4G = 50

Paul: 3D + 8G = 94

4G = 44

G=11
