The altitude of a parallelogram measures 11 centimeters less than its base . The area of the parallelogram is 80 square centimeters.Find the measure of its base and measure of its altitude.

Base = x

Height = x-11

Area = x (x-11) = 80

Area = x^2 - 11x = 80

x^2 - 11x - 80 = 0

(x+5) (x-16) = 0

solutions for x are (-5) and 16

(-5) does not work so x=16

base = 16

height = 16-11 = 5

Therefore, base equals 16 and altitude equals 5.
