Hi there! I am happy to help! My name is Nicole. Let's first start by looking at the math problem and picking out the parts that are math related.
keira bought 5 boxes of donuts in each box there are 37 donuts how many donuts does keira have?
What you want to do is see that there are two numbers. We have 5 boxes, which is part of the answer and then each box has 37 donuts which is the other part of the answer.
So, if one box has 37 donuts in it, we know that we have 37 donuts in that box. But now we also know that we have 5 boxes. What we're going to do is multiply 37 and 5 together to get our answer.
Let's write down 37 x 5 = ?
Now, I will say I do not know how to do this common core way, so I will explain this the way I was taught how to do multiplication. First, let's multiply 7 and 5. That gives us 35. Next, we will write the 5 under the 7 and the 5, and carry the 3 to the 3 because that 3 is an additional number we need to solve the problem. Next, let's multiply 5 and 3, that gives us 15, but we also have to add the 3 from before. Now that gives us 18. Let's write the 18 next to the 5 below and that gives us 185.
So now we can say that Keira has 185 donuts. We figured this out by multiplying 37 and 5 together.
Let me know if this approach helps!
