5a+12p=205 [1]
2a+1p=25 [2]
Multiply [2] by -12 to get -24a-12p=-300
5a+12p=205
-24a-12p=-300
Add together
-19a=-95
Divide by -19 to get a=5
Substitute back into [2]
2(5)+p=25
10+p=25
p=15
Check in [1]
5(5)+12(15) = 205
25 + 180 = 205
Apple pies are $5 and pumpkin pies are $15 ■
