That solution makes sense, EXCEPT, it says he read 1/4 of the REMAINING book on Tuesday, not 1/4 of the WHOLE book. So on Tuesday, did he read 1/4 of 7/8 of the book, or 1/4 of the WHOLE book? This completely changes the problem, which is why I also found it confusing. I hate Math In Focus!12/23/20

I got 120. 30 pages is 2/8 of the book, which means 15 pages is 1/8 of the book. Remaining we have 5/8 which adds to 75 pages, then add all those up and it’s 120. :)02/21/23

I wrote and solved the equation: 30 + 1/8x + 1/4x = x … 48 = x Then checked: 30 + 48/8 + 48/4 = 48 … 48 = 48 Note: Strictly speaking, the problem should state “Klein read the first 30 pages” not “Klein read 30 pages”.02/22/23

@Marie S: reading carefully, it says “the remaining 1/4” not “1/4 of the remainder” so there’s no ambiguity @Tf hiv: for sln 120 the check 30 + 120/8 + 120/4 = 120 fails, but sln 48 check 30 + 48/8 + 48/4 = 48 passes, so 48 is the correct answer02/22/23

Let's assume that the total number of pages in the book is 'x'. On Monday, Klein read 30 pages of the book, so the number of pages left to read is (x - 30). On Tuesday, he read 1/8 of the book, which is (1/8)x pages. So the number of pages left to read after Tuesday is: (x - 30) - (1/8)x = (7/8)x - 30 On Wednesday, Klein completed the remaining 1/4 of the book. So we have: (7/8)x - 30 = (1/4)x Solving for x, we get: (7/8)x = (1/4)x + 30 (7/8)x - (1/4)x = 30 (5/8)x = 30 x = (8/5) * 30 x = 48 Therefore, the book has 48 pages.02/23/23
