Hi Adi,
You can add these mixed numbers in more than one way.
FIRST WAY: You can add the whole numbers first, then add the fractional parts (using a least common denominator).
SECOND WAY: You can convert both mixed numbers to improper fractions, find a common denominator, add the fractions, then simplify your solution.
Let's try it the first way:
11 + 5 is 16
Now lets add the fractional parts. The least common denominator will be 24:
5 = 15 2 = 16
8 24 3 24
Now add : 15 + 16 = 31
24 24 24
31 is equivalent to 1 7
24 24
The final sum will be 16 + 1 7 = 17 7
24 24
